During the winter months, the St. Augustine goes dormant...no need for water. Water will only encourage a fungus problem. If the brown patches are growing (use a stake to mark its progress) use a fungicide such as revere or compass and shut off the water and don't fertilize. It should stop, but there's a good chance it will start up in the spring again when you start watering again and temperatures cause dew on the grass. Main rule...if you have a fungus, do not water or fertilize until you take care of the fungus.
